Nigerian Cup champions Akwa United have suspended head coach Maurice Cooreman with immediate effect in the wake of the 1-0 defeat to Enyimba.

The Promise Keepers have not enjoyed a good start to the league season, winning just five of their opening 13 games to sit 10th in the standings.

Cooreman's side failed to make it past the preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup in February and have won just two league games since.

Sunday's reverse at home to the Peoples' Elephant spurred the Akwa board into action, with the Belgian coach informed of the news in a letter signed by the club's chairman, Paul Bassey, on Monday evening.

Cooreman's assistant, Ere Dokubo, has been handed the reins, along with a three-match ultimatum to improve results "or be fired."
