The agent of Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has warned that the club need to show ambition to ensure that his client remains with the Bundesliga giants.

The 33-year-old has been with Bayern since the summer of 2011, having started his career with Schalke, but Thomas Kroth is concerned that the reigning Bundesliga champions have not been active enough in the transfer market to stay competitive in Europe.

Now he is in the phase in which he has to decide - how will things progress in the future?

Thomas Kroth

Kroth told Suddeutsche Zeitung: "He wants to win Euro 2020 and he wants to win the Champions League again. Manuel is success-oriented.

"My impression is that the gap to the top four English top teams is already serious and the Munich squad is currently not yet as competitive, or set up to tackle Manuel's goals seriously.

"When he realises that Bayern are responding, then he will probably blossom again. Now he is in the phase in which he has to decide - how will things progress in the future?

"Signing a contract extension and ending his career at Bayern is of course the obvious option, but it's not the only one."

Bayern have won the Bundesliga title in each of the last seven seasons, while in the same time period they have won the Champions League once and reached the semi-finals of four further occasions.

Last term they were knocked out at the last-16 stage of the competition, losing 3-1 on aggregate to eventual winners Liverpool.

Bayern are priced at 10/1 to win the Champions League next season, with Barcelona 13/2 and Real Madrid 8/1.
