AFCON 2015: Asamoah Gyan can't explain substitution before penalty shootout against Ivory Coast
Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan says he is unable to explain his substitution just before the penalty shootout defeat to Cote d’Ivoire in the final of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Black Stars crashed to a disappointing 9-8 defeat in the shootout despite taking a 2-0 lead after the game had ended goalless in regulation and extra time on Sunday.
Ghana were hoping to end their over three-decade wait for an African Cup title but rather in the end were cursing their luck with another failed attempt with a penalty shootout.
Gyan was expected to be amongst the takers in the exercise but was replaced just before the referee blasted his whistle to end extra time.
The Al Ain ace who had ceded responsibility as the number one penalty taker for the team sat helpless on the bench as he watched his side lose the final.
“I cannot explain that,” Gyan said.
“The coach made a decision and we have to respect that.”

We cant understand each either but then someone had the chance to be a legend and he didnt quite have the nerves to pull it off oh ghanaian youths. You will think assistant konadu will have a say on what was happening so it couldnt be a grant alone who has to take some blame. In the past i urged for call up of certain players but atsu showed at this tourney that mental strenght is equally important as ability. We must look forward with hope as the bs are begining to look like the solid unit that it was before manager kwesi appiah came in and destroyed the team unity and demoralise goalkeepers leading us to lose when we needed our real top goalkeeper whoever he really was.well done though gyan and rest of team bs. We cry today but we may yet laugh together sometime. Better luck next time. No one is to blame, weve come a long way off wc2014. I believe the only way is up guys dont despair. As for dede you cried for all of ghana. We love you lads and are proud of you

Wakaso and Jordan are my new favourite players in the Black Stars set up. They are mentally strong individuals, they have character. The character you need, if you want to win championships and perform at the highest level i.e world cup. Not the characters who chickens out when the moment calls especially when they are the most experienced, the oldest and the captain of the team. I salute these two players as well as Afriyie Acquah and Frank Acheampong FOR BEING BOLD AND STEPPING UP when better players were running scared.

You want to win trophies BUT AFRIAD TO STEP UP? YOU ARE AFRIAD TO WIN TROPHIES? A half fit Asamoah Gyan is still a better penalty taker than most of the players on the field of play. So why did Asamoah Gyan chicken out? Winning trophies is not for the weak minded individual; it’s for people with characters and the mental fortitude. You chicken out when you are the leader, the oldest and the captain of the team when you should rallying and preparing our troops mentally for the moment. Highly disappointed.

he missed a penalty that could have taken ghana to the worldcup 2010 semi finals and also kennedy mweene of zambia sent him into temporal retirement from international football after saving his penalty in the semi finals of the afcon2012, the coach did well to sub him

Well said Paradox. I would have done same if i were the coach. Gyan has said he would not take penalty kick again in memory of his late mum. So it was best the coach changed him. I felt Dede should have taken the third penalty. Scoring would have given confidence to the fourth penalty taker.
