Ho Chi Minh City: Timor-Leste secured their first win in their AFC U-23 Championship qualifying campaign after a 7-1 win over Macau in Thong Nhat Stadium on Sunday.

Henrique Cruz handed Timor an early advantage with a goal just two minutes into the game after taking advantage of Macau’s mistake in the penalty area. Cruz, however, was sent off in the 10th minute for rough play.

Despite playing with 10 players, Kim Shin-hwan’s side remained focused and Nataniel Reis doubled their lead in the 24th minute, with Kornelis Portela’s long range shot handing them a comfortable lead going into the break.

Timor continued to control the game in the second half, with Rufino Gama (pictured, right) adding a fourth in the 52nd minute. Lo Man Hin pulled one back for Macau 64 minutes into the game, but teammate Chu Kai Wang conceded a penalty which Reis converted in the 66th minute.

Portela bagged his second of the match with another spot kick in the 76th minute, before Tomas Sarmento added one to his name with five minutes remaining.

Kim Shin Hwan (Timor coach):

"I am satisfied with the victory today because we played well with a very good performance. I think that the 4-0 loss against Vietnam in our opening match was an accident. We will show another face when we play against Vietnam at the SEA Games next month."

Tam Lao San (Macau coach):

"Timor-Leste is much stronger than us, so they deserved to win this game. We tried our best today, but we have to accept to lose the game. We have learnt so much from this tournament and my players have to learn much more to improve their skills."
