The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has thrown its weight behind Ademola Lookman after the Atalanta forward was criticised by his manager Gian Piero Gasperini for taking a penalty in their Champions League defeat to Club Brugge, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

Lookman, who scored after the restart, saw his penalty saved by Simon Mignolet, prompting Gasperini to describe him as "the worst penalty taker he has ever seen".

However, Lookman has since revealed that he was permitted by his teammates to take the penalty, contradicting Gasperini's claims.

The NFF has now backed Lookman, reposting his post with the caption "We are with you Ade"

The controversy has sparked debate, with many questioning Gasperini's criticism of Lookman's penalty-taking abilities.

Lookman, the current African Footballer of the Year, has to his name 17 goals and 7 assists with the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
