Abia Warriors seek first away win at Rangers in three years
Abia Warriors will attempt to end a three-year wait for a league victory away to Oriental rivals Enugu Rangers when the sides meet at Awka Township Stadium on Sunday.
The Umuahia-based club last won at Rangers on 15 January 2023, securing a notable 2-0 victory against the Flying Antelopes in Enugu. Since then, however, their visits to Rangers have produced little reward.
Across the four away meetings since that success, Abia Warriors have suffered three defeats and taken only one point from a draw. Rangers have continued to make home advantage count in their matches against their eastern rivals.
The recent record gives the hosts the statistical edge. Rangers have won each of their last three home fixtures against Abia Warriors, scoring six goals and conceding two. They have also allowed an average of just 0.7 goals per game at home this season.
Abia Warriors arrive for the derby with a different profile from the team that struggled in previous encounters. They have emerged as one of the NPFL’s strongest transition sides, posing a threat through their speed on the counter-attack and their ability to create danger late in each half.
That improvement will be tested against a Rangers side whose home form has made this fixture particularly difficult for the visitors. For Abia Warriors, victory would represent more than three points: it would bring an end to their long wait for a league win at their biggest rivals and strengthen their position in the race for continental places.
Both clubs go into the meeting after positive results in their previous matches. Abia Warriors produced a comfortable 3-0 home victory over Bendel Insurance, while Rangers secured a narrow 1-0 away win against Warri Wolves.
The contrasting results set up a competitive derby, with Abia Warriors seeking to turn their improved performances into a first away success at Rangers since January 2023, while the hosts will look to extend their strong record on home soil against their regional rivals.
