Abia Comets have secured an immediate return to the Nigeria National League (NNL) after taking over the league position of newly promoted Right2Win FC, Umuahia.

The club had been relegated from Southern Conference A at the end of the 2025/2026 season and were due to play in the third-tier Nationwide League One (NLO). However, Abia Comets will not feature in the NLO after acquiring Right2Win FC’s NNL slot.

Right2Win FC won the recently concluded NLO promotion playoffs in Aba, but subsequently sold their place in the NNL to Abia Comets.

Boniface ‘Bontus’ Uche, chairman of Abia Comets and the brother of former Super Eagles captain and defender Okechukwu Uche, confirmed the development on Thursday morning.

“It wasn’t easy. I can only say it was God’s doing and I’m grateful,” Uche told Completesports.com.

“We’ve taken over the position of Right2Win. The guy (Right2Win owner, Engr Emeka Nnorom), is a nice man.”

Uche said the club’s preparations were already under way, with Abia Comets currently participating in the Governor’s Pre Season Tournament in Uyo.

“As we speak now, I’m in Uyo where we’re taking part in the Governor’s Pre Season Tournament. Our Semifinal match is coming up in a few minutes time,” he added.

The agreement was also acknowledged by Right2Win FC proprietor Engr Emeka Nnorom, who indicated that further details would be announced shortly.

“Yes, that’s not far from the truth. In a few days time, we’ll make public the position of things,” Nnorom said.

The return means Abia Comets will remain in the NNL despite their relegation at the close of the 2025/2026 campaign. The club had dropped into the NLO without playing a match in that competition before the transfer of Right2Win FC’s league position was agreed.

Right2Win FC’s promotion came after the club finished as champions of the NLO promotion playoffs in Aba. Their decision to sell the NNL slot has allowed Abia Comets to resume at the second-tier level for the forthcoming campaign.

Uche described the development as the result of God’s intervention and expressed his gratitude, while also praising Nnorom during the discussions over the takeover.

Abia Comets are now taking part in the Governor’s Pre Season Tournament in Uyo, where their semi-final was scheduled to take place shortly after Uche spoke on Thursday morning.
