Abdullahi Umar marked his Nigeria debut with an assist as the Super Eagles fought back from 3-1 down to draw 3-3 with Russia in Nizhny Novgorod on Tuesday.

The Hradec Kralove forward came on at half-time and immediately added greater movement to Nigeria’s attack, causing problems for the Russian defence.

Umar’s decisive contribution came in the closing stages. After a swift counter-attack led by Emmanuel Fernandez, the Nigerian delivered a well-timed pass to Akor Adams, who finished in the 94th minute to complete the comeback.

The assist gave Umar a direct and important contribution in his first appearance for the Super Eagles.

Umar reflects on first Nigeria call-up

The match was a significant introduction to international football for Umar, who has spoken about his selection for Nigeria in an interview with Footy-Africa.

His debut also came during a match in which Nigeria used the opportunity to assess several new players. With a number of established players absent, nine footballers made their international debuts against Russia.

For Umar, the performance provided an encouraging beginning with the national team. His attacking energy and late assist could strengthen his case for another call-up during Nigeria’s upcoming fixtures.

The draw in Nizhny Novgorod allowed him to make an immediate impression, while also giving manager Eric Chelle the chance to assess new options within the squad.
