Wolverhampton Wanderers of England goalkeeper, Carl Onuoha Ikeme will receive N10m from Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), as part of the Super Eagles’ joint contributions to the shot-stopper’s treatment of leukaemia.
The illness kept Ikeme out of the Eagles’ last five matches in the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers, but the Nigerian players continue showing support for him in words, material and funds.
The latest donation has now come from the fulfilment of a pledge by NFF sponsors, Aiteo Oil, which had promised N10m for each goal the Eagles scored in their World Cup qualifier against Cameroon in Uyo.
With the Nigerian side subsequently going on to stun the African champions with a 4-0 spanking, Aiteo kept true to its word and doled out N40m to the team, from which N10m has now been deducted in support of Ikeme’s recovery.
The development comes after Aiteo Group pledged to contribute N10m for each goal scored by the Eagles against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, with the donation to be applied to the treatment of Ikeme, who was diagnosed with acute leukaemia in July.
The pledge was the second made by the energy giants prior to each of the Eagles’ games, first being on September 1, when the Group had also committed to N10m for every goal scored.
The Eagles scored four unreplied goals against Cameroon in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State and the 1-1 draw away in Yaoundé resulted in a total pledge of N50m.
The cheque was then presented to the team when they opened camp for their October 7 last World Cup qualifier against Zambia in Uyo.
Executive vice-chairman of Aiteo Group, Benedict Peters said: “We are happy with the progress the Super Eagles are making, and are looking forward to having Ikeme return to action for the national team soon.
