TRANSFERS - Overmars clear about Onana: "Don't sit and wait"

Marc Overmars does not think that Andre Onana will extend his expiring contract with Ajax. The goalkeeper is allowed to train again from Saturday after his suspension and was also registered by his club for the Champions League. However, his contribution seems to be limited next season.
"We have actually been very clear," says Director of Football Affairs Marc Overmars via Ajax's club channels. "We spent a long time extending the contract, but that didn't work. That's why we gave the space to make a transfer, but that didn't work either. We have to continue as a club and have attracted two goalkeepers. Jay Gorter hopes We want to be able to put us in Ajax 1 in the future and Remko Pasveer is for the short term."
Onana was suspended in February this year for doping and will be sidelined until November 4. Ajax therefore tried to extend the goalie's contract, but the Cameroon international did not want to cooperate. "In this case we cannot sit and wait for Andre", continues Overmars. "You never know in football, but I expect that his contract will not be renewed. That has to come from both sides."
It therefore seems that Onana will walk out of the Johan Cruijff ArenA transfer-free in a year. Ajax is letting him train with the promises for the time being, since it already has three goalkeepers in the main force with Maarten Stekelenburg, Remko Pasveer and Jay Gorter. Onana was also registered for the Champions League, but the chance that he will play in that tournament is very small.
