US teenager Matthew Hoppe has scored a hat trick to put Schalke 04 on course for their their first win in nearly 12 months as they lead Hoffenheim 4-0.

Hoppe, 19, is the first American to score a hat trick in Bundesliga history and his goals mean Schalke are likely to stop one short of the winless stretch set by amateur side Tasmania Berlin in the 1965-66 season of Germany's top-flight division.

This was Hoppe's sixth appearance for Schalke and victory would move them off the bottom spot, but still in the relegation places. Armie Harit scored the fourth goal.
