The German Football Association (DFB) has announced that Mainz defender Leon Balogun is under investigation for his actions in the 2-1 defeat at Frankfurt on Sunday.

The Nigeria international is facing charges of violent conduct after television replays showed him catching Frankfurt counterpart Carlos Zambrano in the stomach with a knee in the 89th minute of the Bundesliga clash at the Commerzbank-Arena.

The incident went unnoticed by the referee at the time which allowed the DFB to take retrospective action, and Balogun now has a case to answer.

The off-season signing from Darmstadt is also on the verge of picking up an automatic one-match suspension for Die Nullfunfer, having received four yellow cards in the Bundesliga this term.
