South African footballer, Luke Fleurs tragically lost his life in a car hijacking incident, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

The shooting occurred on Wednesday night at a petrol station in the Johannesburg suburb of Florida, according to police sources cited by BBC Sport.

Fleurs, a 24-year-old star for Kaizer Chiefs, was waiting at the station when he was approached by unidentified gunmen who demanded he exit his vehicle. Following a brief altercation, one of the assailants fled the scene with Fleurs' car after fatally shooting him.

Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, a spokesperson for Gauteng police, stated to local media, "The suspects pointed [at] him with a firearm and took him out of his vehicle, then shot him once on the upper body."

Kaizer Chiefs, a prominent club in South Africa with 12 league titles to their name, expressed profound sorrow over Fleurs' untimely death. The club assured that authorities were handling the investigation and promised to provide further updates as information becomes available.

Fleurs, who joined Kaizer Chiefs last year after playing for SuperSport United, represented South Africa in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 as part of the Under-23 national team.
