Benin Republic head coach Gernot Rohr has hailed Ademola Lookman as the best African footballer currently, tipping him to win the African Player of the Year award, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

Lookman, who finished 14th in the 2024 Ballon d'Or, is competing alongside Nigeria teammate William Troost-Ekong for the crown.

Rohr, who previously coached Nigeria's Super Eagles, worked with Lookman and praised his abilities.

"I love these players, most of whom I worked with in Nigeria," Rohr said.

"For me, Lookman is the best player in Africa right now and deserves the African Player of the Year award."

However, Rohr jokingly hopes Lookman doesn't replicate his past performance against Benin Republic.

"I hope he doesn't score against us like he did in Uyo," Rohr added.
