Reading manager Steve Clarke has hailed the capture of Ghana striker Kwesi Appiah – saying ‘it was the right thing to do’.

The 24-year-old is joining the Royals on loan until the end of the season despite extending his contract at Crystal Palace.

Appiah became an attractive transfer target for several clubs following his exploits with Ghana at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

Reading eventually beat all competition to land the striker on a short-term deal.

The club is hoping to benefit from a return to club scoring form of the Ghanaian, reminiscent of the form that saw him score 10 goals in 14 games during his time at Cambridge United.

“When the opportunity arose to bring Kwesi here until the end of the season, I felt it was the right thing to do,” manager Steve Clarke said.

Appiah is expected to join his new club after his return from national team duty with the Black Stars next week.
