Kai Havertz, a Chelsea forward, announced on Wednesday that he has raised over 400,000 euros (473,000 dollars) for flood victims in western Germany and that he has assisted in the rescue of rescue horses and donkeys from abattoirs.
Havertz, 22, is from Aachen, one of the areas hit hard by torrential rain in mid-July, which claimed the lives of at least 190 people.
The Germany striker, who scored the game-winning goal in the Champions League final last season, has auctioned off 100 pairs of boots he created specifically for flood victims.
"That made me very happy. I was very affected by the situation because it happened close to where my family home is," he told reporters.
"Many people have really lost everything and no longer have a home."
He gathered cash in collaboration with the German Red Cross to guarantee that help was delivered "directly" to the victims.
