NPFL UPDATE: Pillars And Rangers For Gold Cup Tournament
Current Premier League champions, Enugu Rangers, and former Premier League champions, Kano Pillars, along with other clubs from the Premier League and the Nigeria National League will compete in the annual Gold Cup Pre-Season Tournament.
The competition, which organisers said would aid the clubs to prepare for the new league season, will hold in the last week of November in Abuja.
According to the coordinator of the tournament, Tunde Shamsudeen, the competition, which is in its fourth edition, would feature Rangers, Pillars, Lobi Stars, Remo Stars, MFM, Crown, Prime, Niger Tornadoes, FC Ebedei, and ABS FC.
Pillars emerged winners of the 2015 edition after beating Supreme Court of Abuja 2-1 in the final.
Shamsudeen told our correspondent that the prizes to be won at the end of the competition would be revealed at a press conference which will hold before the event.
“We’ve sent invitation letters to the clubs, and we’re doing everything to ensure we make the tournament more glamorous with a cash prize for the winners, a giant trophy, and gold and silver medals.
“We’re also seeking sponsorship for the competition so that this edition would be more successful for all participating teams.”
He noted that the teams are expected to play four group matches with the first two teams with highest points qualifying for the semifinals.
“The tournament will be of high level and is basically to ignite the spirit of the game and to also help the teams test their players before the league season begins,” Shamsudeen said.
