Ghanaian second-tier side Istanbul have suspended defender Henry Amenyo Salifu with 'immediate effect'.

The versatile player physically attacked referee Patrick Kyeremanteng during an FA Cup round of 16 match against Aduana Stars last Sunday.

The incident led to the premature end of the game at the Dorma Park.

The Akyem Techiman-based side has placed an indefinite suspension on the player pending the final determination of the matter by the Ghana FA.

"We would like to announce the suspension of defender Henry Amenyo Salifu indefinitely with immediate effect," a club statement read

"We are surprised at the conduct of a player who has shown tremendous discipline over the years.

"The club will not condone any acts of violence against any person or group of persons.

"He will like to apologise to referee Patrick Kyeremanteng, the Ghana FA  and Ghanaians for the unfortunate incident.

"We would like to appeal to the FA to temper justice with mercy and hand out a punishment which will not kill the career of such a growing talent."

The Ghana FA has begun investigation into the matter.
