NPFL'23: Doma United move into Super six spot
Doma United jumped into the third position on the log of the Nigeria Premier Football League group B following a hard earned 2-1 win over Niger Tornadoes.
Goals from Usman Musa and Charles Chibuke was what the Savannah Tigers needed to overpower Niger Tornadoes at the Pantami Stadium on Sunday.
Charles headed in the winner in the 75th minute, scoring his second league goal this season.
Earlier, Usman Musa who returned to the starting lineup had scored from the spot after his initial strike was handled in the box by Tornadoes defender in the 28th minute.
However, immediately after the break (47), Mark Daniel heads in from a corner to equalise for the visitors.
Before then, Kingdom Osayi who put in a star performance in our draw away at Akure dived to his right to deny Okoromi who was left unmark to fire in a shot.
After Tornadoes’ equalizer, United took control of the game while dictating proceedings as they tried to push for a goal. In what were three similar attempts, Bidemi’s header came off the cross bar and Usman Musa’s header went wide for a goal kick while Saifullahi’s cross found Haruna Aliyu but his efforts went wide as well.
Just when United were attacking, Tornadoes broke away and Hamza Mohammed from the left flank fired in a shot that was parried away by Kingdom while Maurice Chigozie produced a moment of magic after racing alongside Hamza but he was quick enough to clear the ball to safety.
Charles Chibuke who started from the bench heads in Saifullahi’s chipped cross to put the host back ahead and eventually became the game winner and his second goal of the campaign. His first came on the first day of the season against Sunshine stars.
Doma United held on for its second win of the second stanza of the league.
Goal scorer Chibuke said he was hungry to come on while the game was going on “seriously I feel so good and happy. I was just on that bench feeling sad and hungry but I was happy when my coach asked me to warm up. I just know I was hungry to win this match, and God made it possible for me and my teammates. Indeed, he is a miracle Working God.”
On his part, our Technical Adviser, Akinade Onigbinde praised the players for putting in their best especially those who are fasting “most of them are fasting. Some of our key players fast and it is not easy but they still put their best to come back. We are up now. We are going to Dakkada to pick something there insha allahu”
On his general assessment of the game, Akinade said “I feel very great. The boys played well. They are good, wonderful and ready players. We are one ahead, came back and got the final winning. We thank God for the success. It is a great one. We will keep working hard until we get there. Top 6 is our aim and we will get there”.
Doma United moved up to third on the log of Group B, just a point off the top spot.
They play Dakkada FC next in Akwa Ibom on Saturday 8th April, 2023.
