The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has reportedly cautioned Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle against entertaining offers from rival suitors amid growing speculation about his future and an impending FIFA ruling tied to Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualification campaign, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.

Chelle, 48, was appointed in January 2025 following the dismissal of Jose Peseiro and the resignation of Finidi George after a disappointing qualifying run. Under his leadership, Nigeria finished second in CAF Qualification Group C behind South Africa to secure a playoff berth. However, the Super Eagles suffered heartbreak in the decisive tie, losing 4–3 on penalties to DR Congo at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on November 16.

Despite the setback, the NFF retained Chelle for the 35th Africa Cup of Nations. Nigeria impressed in the group stage with victories over Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda. The Super Eagles then defeated Tanzania 4–0 in the Round of 16 and Algeria 2–0 in the quarter-finals before bowing out in the semi-finals following a 4–2 penalty defeat to hosts Morocco. They eventually clinched third place with a 4–2 shootout victory over Egypt.

Federation Issues Warning

Amid reports linking Chelle with the vacant Angola national team position following the dismissal of Patrice Beaumelle, the NFF has reportedly reminded the Franco-Malian tactician of his contractual obligations.

Sources within the federation indicated that any unilateral termination of his contract would attract financial consequences. An official stressed that Chelle remains undera  binding agreement and is not permitted to negotiate with other national teams or clubs without proper authorisation.

The development comes as reports suggest Beaumelle is in talks with Espérance de Tunis after Angola’s disappointing AFCON campaign.

Confidence Over FIFA Case

While uncertainty lingers over Chelle’s future, the NFF has maintained a confident stance regarding Nigeria’s pending case before FIFA concerning DR Congo’s alleged use of ineligible players during the playoffs.

General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi reiterated that the federation would not have pursued the complaint without substantial legal backing, expressing optimism ahead of the verdict.

Within the squad, players are also keeping a close eye on developments. Midfielder Alex Iwobi admitted the team remains hopeful despite the uncertainty surrounding the decision.

As Nigeria awaits FIFA’s ruling, the spotlight now falls on Chelle’s next move — whether he will continue leading the Super Eagles into the next phase of rebuilding or whether external interest will test the federation’s resolve.
