A-League champions Sydney FC are in line to sign Australia defender international Ryan McGowan.

The 29-year-old is reported to be on the verge of joining Steve Corica's team for the defence of their trophy, when he would get the chance to face his brother.

Dylan McGowan signed earlier this week for Western Sydney Wanderers, and Ryan is a free agent after being released at the end of his contract by Bradford City.

It would raise the prospect of the brothers coming up against each other in the first Sydney derby of next season.

The Sky Blues are close to finalising a deal for McGowan, according to reports, with the prospect of being in the same city as his brother having attracted him.

He had already received an offer from Adelaide United, which would have given him the chance to play in the city where he was born.

McGowan, who has played 20 times for the Socceroos, has never played in the A-League so far.

He has also never come up against his younger brother in his career, though the pair played together at Hearts.

Ryan played for both Dundee and Dundee United as well as Partick Thistle.

The defender spent three seasons in China, playing for Henan Jianye, Guizhou Zhicheng and Shandong Luneng as well as Al Sharjah in the UAE.

McGowan played in all three of Australia's games at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, as well as at the U-20 World Cup in 2009.

He is not the only central defender on the radar of Sydney FC, who beat Perth Glory on penalties to win the A-League Grand Final last month.

The club are understood to want to sign an Australian player to partner Alex Wilkinson in the backline, so they can free-up visa player spots elsewhere for their Asian Champions League campaign next season.

Their defence has lost Aaron Calver to Western United, Ben Warland will be out with injury until early next year and Dutchman Jop van der Linden was released.

Sydney FC are 4/1 to win the 2020 Grand Final.
