Maikaba Begins Flying Eagles Rebuild With Bold Promise Ahead WAFU B Challenge
Newly appointed Abdul Maikaba has expressed confidence and readiness after officially taking charge of the Nigeria U-20 team, the Flying Eagles, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.
Maikaba was confirmed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) following approval from its Executive Committee based on recommendations from the Technical and Development Committee. He takes over from Aliyu Zubairu as head coach of the seven-time African champions.
The coaching structure also includes Ortega Deniran as first assistant coach, Abdullahi Biffo as second assistant, and former international Usman Mohammed as goalkeepers’ trainer.
Speaking after his appointment, Maikaba described the role as a major honour and responsibility, pledging to build a strong and competitive team capable of making Nigeria proud on the international stage.
“Nigeria’s football history is built on passion, grit, and talent. We are ready to write the next chapter,” he said.
He added that preparations would begin immediately, with a focus on developing young talents and establishing a winning mentality within the squad.
Maikaba’s first assignment will be the WAFU B U-20 Championship in Ivory Coast in July, a crucial tournament that serves as qualification for the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations and, ultimately, the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
To kickstart preparations, the coach has already invited a 35-man provisional squad made up of goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders, and forwards as he begins shaping his team for the competition.
