Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez, who scored yesterday against Villarreal (2-2) in the match of Matchday 3 of La Liga, suffers from "moderate edema" in his left knee and will not be able to respond to Uruguay's call-up for the qualifying matches for the 2022 World Cup in early September. Atletico Madrid, his club, announced it on Monday with a press release.

"Atletico Madrid medical staff subjected Luis Suarez to examinations in the university clinic of Navarra (Madrid) after the player left the pitch yesterday during the game with Villarreal due to pain. MRI detected edema moderate on the posterior surface of the left knee ", reads the statement from Atletico. Suarez will therefore not be able to play in Uruguay for the first international window of the season: the 'Celeste' will face Peru (Friday), Bolivia (6 September), and Ecuador (10 September).
