Jonathan David fires Atletico Madrid to emphatic win over Osasuna

Jonathan David scored as Atletico Madrid secured a 4-0 victory over Osasuna at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium to climb to third in La Liga.

The result means Atletico Madrid have lost only one of their past 14 meetings with Osasuna, while the visitors have now suffered three consecutive defeats.

Diego Simeone’s side endured one of their more difficult starts to a season, with uncertainty surrounding Julian Alvarez’s potential transfer adding to their problems on the pitch. Back-to-back defeats at the beginning of September had increased the pressure, but a 3-0 victory at Real Sociedad last weekend offered a positive response.

Atletico Madrid continued that momentum in front of their home supporters, producing a dominant first-half display despite taking time to find the breakthrough.

Ademola Lookman headed over from an unmarked position at the far post before Aitor Fernandez saved Kang-in Lee’s effort. Cristian Romero then went close with a header that drifted wide, but the hosts finally took the lead midway through the first half.

Jonathan David had been relatively quiet, but he made the most of his opportunity from close range. Fernandez saved his initial attempt, only for David to convert the rebound.

The goalkeeper kept Osasuna in the contest before the interval with another double save, denying Lee and then David. Alex Baena also came close when his curling effort narrowly missed the target.

Atletico’s advantage remained precarious at half-time. Jan Oblak had to react sharply to prevent Raul Garcia from scoring, while Osasuna saw a goal disallowed after a foul on Robin Le Normand in the build-up.

The hosts responded decisively after the break. Baena forced Fernandez into another save within seconds of the restart, before Lee doubled the lead with a low finish into the corner at the end of a quick attacking move.

Atletico Madrid added a third soon afterwards when Le Normand produced an impressive finish from a corner. Lee continued to threaten and nearly scored again, drawing an outstanding save from Fernandez with a long-range effort.

Osasuna offered little attacking threat as the game progressed, but Atletico still found time for a fourth. Baena completed the scoring with a composed first-time finish from inside the area.

Osasuna’s form away from home is a growing concern, with only one victory in their past 10 matches on the road. Their bright start to the campaign now appears to be under threat.

Atletico Madrid will hope this emphatic result marks the beginning of a sustained challenge near the top of the table.
