Former Liverpool and Arsenal footballer Jermaine Pennant needed 50 stitches after being attacked by a German shepherd while walking his dog.

Pennant said the off-lead dog suddenly went for his pet. He intervened in an attempt to separate the animals but was bitten four times on his right lower leg, causing deep wounds.

The 42-year-old was taken to hospital and has reported the incident to police, according to Goal.

Pennant is likely to require an operation to repair damage to his calf muscle and treat the injuries caused by the attack.
