William Troost-Ekong reportedly embraces Islam in Qatar

Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has reportedly converted to Islam after reciting the Shahadah, the Islamic declaration of faith, while in Doha, Qatar.

The development was reported on Wednesday by Qatari newspaper Al-Arab, which said the Nigeria international made the announcement after reciting the two testimonies of faith during his stay in the country.

Footage said to show Troost-Ekong reciting the Shahadah has also been shared on social media. Muslim scholar Dr Muhammad Salah posted the video on Facebook and described the Nigerian defender as having embraced Islam.

The report has been repeated by international media organisations, including Moroccan sports publication Elbotola and Egyptian newspaper Youm7. Both outlets reported that the former Super Eagles captain had recited the Shahadah.

Troost-Ekong, 33, is currently playing in the Qatar Stars League for Al-Ahli in Doha. He joined the club in January 2026 on a one-and-a-half-year contract after leaving Saudi Arabian side Al-Kholood.

The experienced centre-back has made more than 70 appearances for Nigeria and has captained the national team at major international tournaments.

He was part of the Super Eagles squad that reached the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire. Troost-Ekong scored three goals during the competition and was named Player of the Tournament.

One of those goals came in the final against hosts Cote d’Ivoire.

Troost-Ekong has also represented Nigeria at the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games, establishing himself as one of the country’s most experienced defenders of the past decade.

His reported conversion comes as he continues his professional career in Qatar. The claims have been accompanied by the video circulated online, although the reports describe the development as having taken place after his recitation of the Shahadah.

Troost-Ekong began his current spell in Qatar after moving from Al-Kholood in January 2026. His one-and-a-half-year agreement with Al-Ahli keeps him at the Doha-based club beyond the current season.

The defender’s international career has included leadership roles as well as major tournament appearances. He was Nigeria’s captain during the team’s run to the Africa Cup of Nations final, where his performances earned him the tournament’s individual award.
