Chelle to Use Unity Cup as Trial Ground for Super Eagles Squad Reshuffle
Nigeria national team coach Eric Chelle has revealed that the upcoming 2026 Unity Cup in London will be a key factor in shaping his squad selection for Nigeria’s planned international friendlies against Portugal national football team and Poland national football team, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.
Chelle explained that the tournament will give him the opportunity to test new and emerging players while also broadening the national team pool ahead of future competitions, including the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Several players are expected to receive opportunities during the Unity Cup, including Owen Oseni, Rafiu Durosinmi, Philip Otele, Samson Tijani, and Tosin Oyedokun.
According to Chelle, the competition will serve as an important assessment platform for identifying players who fit into his tactical plans and increasing competition within the squad.
“Nigeria is blessed with talent, but not everyone can play at the same time. The Unity Cup gives us a chance to look at new players and widen our options,” he said.
The coach added that a more experienced squad is expected for the high-profile friendlies against Poland and Portugal after the tournament, though he noted that player availability could be affected by fatigue and injuries following the European season.
Chelle also confirmed he is closely monitoring players in the Nigeria Premier Football League as part of efforts to integrate more home-based talent into the national team setup.
The approach forms part of a wider rebuilding project aimed at creating a stronger and more balanced Super Eagles side capable of competing at the highest level internationally.
