Igoh Ogbu Targets Unity Cup Glory After Super Eagles Beat Zimbabwe
Super Eagles defender Igoh Ogbu has expressed confidence that Nigeria can successfully defend their Unity Cup crown after booking a place in the final of the tournament, Nigeriasoccernet.com reports.
Éric Chelle’s side secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe in Tuesday night’s semi-final clash, setting up a showdown against Jamaica, which also defeated India 2-0 in the other semi-final.
The final is scheduled to take place on Saturday at The Valley, home ground of Charlton Athletic F.C. in London.
Speaking after the victory over the Warriors, Ogbu stated that the team remains fully focused on retaining the title they won in 2025.
“We have to keep our heads straight, keep working hard and continue doing our best because it is a privilege to play for Nigeria,” Ogbu said.
“Now that we are in the final, we understand what we need to do. We will recover and prepare well because the reason we came here is to win and retain the title.”
The defender delivered an assured performance at the heart of the Super Eagles' defence alongside Trabzonspor centre-back Chibuike Nwaiwu, as Zimbabwe struggled to create clear chances throughout the encounter.
Nigeria limited the Warriors to very few opportunities, with goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo barely tested for large parts of the game.
Reflecting on the contest, Ogbu admitted the encounter was physically demanding despite the comfortable scoreline.
“It was a very tough game, especially in the second half, but we thank God for the victory. It was not easy at all,” he added.
“It went well in the end. The boys did well, they pushed hard, and now we have to enjoy the win and focus on the next game.”
