On-Form Egbuchulam's Winning Goal Send Ranger Back On Top
Enugu Rangers are back on top of the Nigeria league after they beat erstwhile leaders FC IfeanyiUbah 1-0 Saturday in Enugu with match winner Chisom Egbuchulam saying he is now looking forward to a Super Eagles call-up.
Rangers now have 21 points, two more than IfeanyiUbah, who drop to second place.
It was a sweet revenge for ‘The Flying Antelopes’, who last season lost 3-2 to the Nnewi club in front of their home fans.
On-form Egbuchulam scored the winning goal after just four minutes. It was his sixth goal of the season.
He said: “I am excited to score today''.
“Our opponents gave is a good fight, but thank God we came out tops in the end.
“I hope I continue to score goals as I want to be called up to the Super Eagles and also win the league with Rangers.
“My focus now is on our next game against Giwa.”
A wrong pass by skipper Thompson Emmanuel met Egbuchulam, who took on Chibuzor Okonkwo before rounding off goalkeeper Uche Okafor to put the home team in front.
Nigeria international Bright Onyedikachi then failed to score an equaliser when his effort rolled past the Rangers goal.
In the second half, IfeanyiUbah pushed for an equaliser but it was not to be with Rangers defender Etim Matthew producing goalline clearance to prevent Adeleye Olamilekan’s header from resting at the back of the net.
Bulgarian coach Mitko Dobrev brought in attacking options Okereke Maduabuchi and Suleiman Mohammed for Tamen Medrano and Kofi Nti, but they were curtailed by the defence marshaled by experienced skipper Okey Odita.
