Ex-Ghana midfielder Laryea Kingson is urging local clubs not be discouraged by their constant failures in Africa's elite inter-club competitions.
Hearts, the country’s only surving team in Africa inter-club competition this year, are on the verge of elimination after they suffered a crushing 4-0 defeat at Esperance last Sunday.
Kotoko could not progress past the preliminary stage to highlight what has been pretty difficult times for Ghanaian clubs.
No Ghanaian club has reached the group phase of CAF inter-club competition since Berekum Chelsea achieved the feat in 2012 and there have been clamouring calls for the teams to simply stay away.
But ex-Ghana international Laryea Kingston wants cool heads to prevail and insists clubs must not give up despite the constant failures.
“I don’t think withdrawing from inter-club competition because of poorperformance of our clubs is a good idea, because we need competitions like these to expose our local league, country and our players as well,” he told Starr sports
“One major problem affecting Ghana league, is the low salary given to the players, so if the player gets another opportunity outside Ghana where he will be paid well, they jump into those opportunities.”
“If you look at the clubs that perform well in the inter-continental competitions, they have experienced players and they buy good players around the continent and I believe we can do same if we also want to improve.”
