Nigeria International Cyriel Dessers is optimistic that Feyenoord might have the €4m required to sign him from Genk later in summer transfer window.

Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers has opened the door of a return to Dutch Eredivisie side Feyenoord during the 2022 summer transfer season.

Dessers had a very productive loan spell in De Kuip for the 2021/22 club season, scoring 20 goals and providing assists for the Dutch side in all competitions.

However, Feyenoord announced at the end of Dessers' loan period that they would not be paying the €4m required to sign the Nigerian international on a permanent deal.

As reported by Het Nieuwsblad via Voetbal4u, Dessers noted that it was obvious his loan deal was a success for Feyenoord on the pitch and this was why the club wanted to sign him on a permanent deal.

Dessers said: “It showed that it clicked on purely sporting terms, but that at a certain point you collide with financial reality. I showed something. Then several people hope that it can happen after all."

The 27-year-old striker further stated that he wishes to sign for Feyenoord on a permanent deal because for the first time in his career he felt like staying at a particular club for the rest of his career.

"Every interview I was asked what would happen. But I honestly didn't know. I was very happy in Feyenoord. For the first time I was at a club that I wouldn't mind staying the rest of my career. That was a nice feeling that I cherished," Dessers said.

Dessers recognises that the €4m quoted by his parent club KRC Genk was beyond Feyenoord's financial capacity and this was what held up the deal to sign him on a permanent deal.

Dessers said: “Four million was the amount they had spent on all their transfers together last summer.

"They never thought they would be willing to pay four million a year later for one player who is already 27 and probably never could be sold for double or triple.”

However, the Super Eagles striker believes that the Dutch side could still come back for his signature later in the transfer window if they can sell other players in the squad.

Dessers said: "On August 31, 2021, four million was a lot of money for Feyenoord and it still is. Maybe that will change later in the summer when they have sold some good players. But at the moment it is still too much.”

Dessers is currently with the Nigerian senior national team and he scored his first international goal for the Super Eagles in Nigeria's 2-1 friendly loss to Mexico at the AT&T Stadium, Texas on Sunday, May 29.
