AFCON 2015: Christian Atsu backs Avram Grant to end Ghana's trophy drought
Winger Christian Atsu has backed Avram Grant to end Ghana’s long trophy drought at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
The former Chelsea boss will be leading the Black Stars to this month’s tournament in his first major assignment since being appointed in November.
Grant has had only six weeks to prepare the side for the tournament which begins on Saturday.
Ghana have also been drawn in the toughest group at the finals where they face Senegal, Algeria and South Africa.
Atsu however believes the undoubted pedigree of the Israeli trainer could steer the Black Stars to Nations Cup success in Equatorial Guinea.
“I was very happy that we have a very good coach,” the on-loan Chelsea youngster at Everton said.
“He has a very high profile, we know he was in Chelsea and he can help the team to move forward.
"We had great coaches who applied for the job and when you hear the news in Ghana, a lot of the fans prefer Avram Grant because of his profile, because of his experience and because of how far he has gone in football.
"The fans love him and they are looking for him to build the team not just to win African Cup but to build a team and then in the future we can win something for Ghana.
"I think he's the right man. For 32 years now, we haven't won the African Cup and the fans are really angry with the players.
"So I think we also needed a good coach to lead us and I think Avram Grant will be the man to lead the Black Stars to victory."
Ghana will kick start its Group C campaign with a tough game against West African rivals Senegal on Monday.
The Black Stars will also play tournament favourites Algeria and South Africa in their subsequent group matches.
