Bilbao lose patience with Berizzo
Athletic Bilbao have sacked their coach Eduardo Berizzo in the wake of Monday's 3-0 defeat at Levante which left the club 18th in La Liga.
The 49-year-old Argentinian had coached Celta Vigo and Sevilla before taking charge of Bilbao at the end of May.
However, the Basque club have endured a dismal campaign and have only won one of their first 14 La Liga games - and that was a 2-1 victory against Leganes on the opening weekend of the season.
Since then they have drawn eight matches and lost five.
Bilbao, who have never been relegated from La Liga, have named their B team manager Gaizka Garitano as Berizzo's successor.
"Athletic Club has decided to end the contract with coach Eduardo Berizzo," the club tweeted. "From Wednesday 5th December, Gaizka Garitano will be in charge of the first team."
Garitano guided Eibar to promotion to La Liga in 2014, but resigned one year later when they were relegated in 2015, despite the club being reinstated following Elche's demotion.
He had spells in charge of Valladolid and Deportivo La Coruna before taking over at Bilbao Athletic, the club's reserve side.
Athletic Bilbao are 7/2 to be relegated this season and 17/10 to beat Huesca in their next match on Thursday.
