Barcelona step up interest in RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba

Barcelona are leading the race for RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United also monitoring the 23-year-old centre-back.

Hansi Flick is keen to strengthen his defence with a left-footed player who is comfortable building from the back under pressure. Lukeba’s pace, ability to play out from defence and composure when pressed make him a strong fit for the Barcelona manager’s requirements.

Barcelona are understood to have shown the greatest interest among the clubs tracking the France defender. No formal bid has been submitted, but contact has been made through intermediaries.

Lukeba would reportedly be open to a move to Barcelona. He is attracted by the club’s sporting project and the possibility of working with Flick.

RB Leipzig, however, are in a strong negotiating position. Lukeba’s contract runs until June 2029 and a release clause previously thought to be worth between 80m and 90m euros has expired.

The German club currently value the defender, who is of Angolan origin, at between 60m and 65m euros, including bonuses.

Leipzig reluctant to sell in January

A move during the winter transfer window is not a priority for Leipzig, who want to maintain stability in their defence. The club could nevertheless consider a departure if they receive an attractive financial offer, particularly during next summer’s transfer window.

Lukeba’s emergence as a target for Barcelona and three leading English clubs could make the next transfer windows significant for the player. His market value is estimated at 50m euros by Transfermarkt.

The defender earns an annual salary of 3,000,000 euros, equivalent to 1,950,000,000 FCFA, in Germany.
