ACL chance for Jets Champness
Joey Champness could keep his place in the Newcastle Jets side for the Asian Champions League qualifier against Kashima Antlers, after scoring in the 3-1 win over Melbourne City.
Champness played just his second game of the season for Ernie Merrick's side as they saw off the visitors to keep alive their hopes of making the A-League Finals Series.
He scored the goal that restored Newcastle's advantage in the second half, and came up with an assist four minutes later when Roy O'Donovan netted.
The boys that are out there that played on Tuesday night did a hell of a job.
Ernie Merrick
Champness wasn't in the squad for the 3-1 ACL qualifying win over Persija Jakarta in midweek. But he's been named as a replacement for Jason Hoffman for Tuesday's game in Japan, where a win will put the Jets into the group stages.
Hoffman will miss the rest of the A-League season due to an ankle injury suffered in training on Sunday.
Speaking after the win over City at McDonald Jones Stadium, Merrick said: "We needed to get Joey game time and he's proved that he's not far away from 60 to 70 minutes."
The Jets coach praised his understrength side, which featured seven changes from the Jakarta game.
"We managed to change our whole style of football - we didn't have the legs to run," he said. "The boys that are out there that played on Tuesday night did a hell of a job.
"We had to play really compactly and catch them on the break and we did that really well, especially Roy and Joey Champness."
The Jets head to Japan for their fourth game in 12 days, and Merrick said: "I think we'll be running on adrenaline alone; they'll be exhausted but they'll fire up for that game."
Newcastle Jets are 7/4 to win their next game against Adelaide United, who are 6/4 with the draw 23/10.
