Solskjaer has been out of work since leaving United in November 2021. He led the club to back-to-back top four finishes in 2020 and 2021.

United finished second in the Premier League behind champions Manchester City in 2021 and reached the Europa League final, where they were beaten on penalties by Villarreal.

Besiktas are looking for a new coach after parting company with former Portugal boss Fernando Santos in April. Solskjaer was first contacted by Besiktas in January before they appointed Santos.

The Turkish club finished the season sixth in the Super Lig, 46 points behind champions Galatasaray. They were last crowned champions of Turkey in 2021.

Solskjaer has turned down a number of jobs -- both with clubs and national teams -- since leaving Old Trafford. He was linked with the Canada head coach job before Jesse Marsch was appointed in May.

If Solskjaer accepts the job with Besiktas, he will come up against another former United manager in Turkey after Jose Mourinho was appointed as manager of Fenerbahce. Solskjaer took over from Mourinho at Old Trafford after the Portuguese coach was sacked in December 2018.

Mourinho spent just over two years at United, winning both the Carabao Cup and the Europa League in 2017.

If the deal goes through, Besiktas will become Solskjaer's fourth managerial job after spells at United, Molde and Cardiff City. He spent 11 years as a player at United, scoring 126 goals in 366 games.

Solskjaer won 10 major honours, including six Premier League titles and the 1999 Champions League.
