The Philadelphia Union won for the first time in almost a month as they defeated Orlando City SC 3-1 at the Orlando City Stadium on Wednesday.
Chris Mueller gave the hosts an eighth minute lead but the Union struck back, twice from Kacper Przybylko and once from Fabrice Picault. Orlando ended the contest with only nine men after Robin Jansson and Sacha Kljestan were both sent off.
The result leaves Philadelphia four points ahead of DC United in the Eastern Conference standings, although having played one more game. In a scheduling quirk the Union, 10/1 to win the MLS Cup, welcome Orlando City to the Talen Energy Stadium on Saturday in an immediate rematch.
Meanwhile, DC United are in action on Thursday when they visit FC Dallas. The visitors are coming off a 1-1 draw at home against Toronto FC when a late Wayne Rooney penalty rescued a point for the hosts. Rooney is tied for third in scoring in the MLS on 10 goals with Josef Martinez of Atlanta United. Zlatan Ibrahimovic has 11 while Carlos Vega leads the league with 17.
Vela was on target on Wednesday as LAFC, the leaders in the Western Conference, thrashed Sporting Kansas City 5-1. Christian Ramirez, Diego Rossi, Rodolfo Zelaya and Mohamed El-Munir were also on target for LAFC, the latter scoring twice in the last couple of minutes. It was a disappointing performance from Sporting Kansas City and the type of defeat that leads to a management change.
