Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni says his determination to be ready for the 2026 FIFA World Cup led him to take risks with his fitness, contributing to a difficult start to the 2026/27 club season.

The 26-year-old missed much of pre-season because of several muscle injuries and is now competing for a place in Jose Mourinho’s starting line-up.

Tchouameni has made only two starts for Real Madrid so far this season and, as a result, was left out by Zinedine Zidane for France’s UEFA Nations League camp last month.

The former AS Monaco playmaker said his wish to represent France at the World Cup influenced his decision to continue playing despite experiencing pain.

“From the third or fourth match onwards, and even a little before, I was in pain,” Tchouameni told France 24.

“It’s a World Cup, so I tried to do everything possible to be prepared and to perform at my best on the pitch.

“I took risks that I might not have taken at another time, but I don’t regret anything. As players we understand sometimes there are circumstances that demand you give your all. That’s what I did.

“I paid the price afterward, but I have no regrets about it.”

The midfielder’s comments come after his limited involvement at club level left him out of the latest France squad. His disrupted preparation has also affected his early-season prospects at Real Madrid, where he is fighting to regain a regular starting role.

Tchouameni was also asked about his choice for the 2026 Ballon d’Or during the France 24 interview.

His answer indicated that he expects a French player to win the award.

“Obviously, it has to be a Frenchman.”
