Despite the 2-1 win over Nigerian champions Enyimba at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday, the Downs coach was not happy with their performance
Goals from Leonardo Castro and Wayne Arendse was enough to take Downs to their first three points in Group B, that now compromises of only three teams after Algerian side ES Setif were expunged.
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane said after the game that though they are happy with the result which is the important thing, the way they played was not particularly convincing.
“The result is important (because of) the points, but we only played well in patches. I am not very happy with the play and for me it was not really convincing,” Mosimane said after the match.
The win is a massive boost to the Tshwane outfit as they moved of the foot of the table to give them a solid cushion for a spot in the semi-final.
As for Enyimba, they have suffered their second defeat in as many matches in the group and are now virtually out of the running for a semi-final berth.
“The first goal we got a little bit scrappy, but it counts at this point in time in the Champions League, who cares? We want the goal.
“The second goal is obvious, we know it, and we’ve seen it before from that corner kick. The funny part is the goal they scored. I also saw it before because they scored exactly the same goal last week (against Abba Warriors) from the same guy, from the same position,” Mosimane said.
Next up for Mosimane’s men will be a trip to Zamalek on July 17, and Mosimane believes the group will be decided between these two when they meet in the return tie in Tshwane on July 27 in Tshwane.
The former Bafana Bafana coach says that the Egyptians will also be happy with the result over the two-time African champions.
“I think the Egyptians are also happy with the result. It’s obvious we have to team up now against Enyimba because only two teams can go through,” Mosimane said.
“I mean, that’s business now; we have to keep Enyimba there (at the bottom of the group). Both of us should happy and I think the group will be decided when we play (Zamalek) at home,” Mosimane said.
The win took Downs to the top of the group and in good mood for the top-of-the-table clash with the Egyptians in two weeks time.
