Sunderland paid 10 million euros to sign Jules Ahoka this summer, despite the 20-year-old having made only a handful of senior appearances before arriving in the Premier League.
The defensive midfielder has had limited first-team involvement since moving to England, but that contrast has made him one of the more intriguing young players at the club. Africafoot has highlighted three key points about the DR Congo Under-23 international.
A player developed in DR Congo
Ahoka did not come through a European academy. He developed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo with AC Normands, a club based in the capital.
He began playing at youth level with Magik Stars de Normands before joining the reserve side of AS Normands Stars. He eventually progressed to senior football with the club.
Although he is now part of Sunderland’s Premier League squad, Ahoka was still largely unknown to the wider public until recently. He has represented DR Congo at youth international level and is an international Under-23 player for the Leopards.
A brief spell at Royal Antwerp
Ahoka’s first move to Europe came in September 2025, when Royal Antwerp signed him for 225,000 euros on the final day of the Belgian transfer window.
His senior opportunities in Belgium were limited. He made only four appearances for the club’s first team, while also featuring regularly for the B team throughout last season.
That lack of experience made Sunderland’s decision to invest 10 million euros in him particularly notable.
A major move and rapidly rising valuation
Sunderland’s fee was approximately 44 times the amount paid by Royal Antwerp. The English club also agreed a contract with Ahoka running until 2031, securing the services of a player still at the beginning of his Premier League career.
According to Transfermarkt estimates, his market value has risen from 300,000 euros to 7 million euros since the start of the season. That represents an increase of more than 20 times.
His involvement on the pitch remains modest, however. Ahoka has made just one appearance for Sunderland so far, playing in the EFL Cup against Hull City.
Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris praised the midfielder’s strength in duels, his ability to cover space and the confidence he has shown.
Ahoka has been called up six times by the DR Congo Under-23 side. His next opportunity to be involved with Sunderland could come when they face Brighton in their sixth match of the English league season.
