Arsenal manager Unai Emery may opt to strengthen his squad after learning that Sokratis Papastathopoulos faces a spell on the sidelines.

The Greece international has been ruled out until the end of February after sustaining an ankle injury in the first half of Friday's FA Cup fourth-round defeat to Manchester United.

Sokratis landed awkwardly in an aerial battle with Jesse Lingard and, after initially trying to play on, eventually had to be substituted.

The former Borussia Dortmund defender was not the only Gunners player to pick up an injury on Friday as Laurent Koscielny had to be taken to hospital with a suspected broken jaw after Romelu Lukaku accidentally kicked the Frenchman.

An injury update on Sunday confirmed the defender had "bruising and soft tissue swelling to face and jaw" and is "being reviewed on a daily basis".

Rob Holding will not play again this season so Emery has just two recognised central defenders in his squad - Shkodran Mustafi and Konstantinos Mavropanos.

Nacho Monreal could play in the centre of defence but he has struggled with hamstring injuries this season and has only started nine Premier League matches.

The January transfer deadline will close on Thursday.

Arsenal, 7/2 to finish in the top four of the Premier League this season, can be backed at 1/4 to beat Cardiff City on Tuesday.
