The 26-year-old centre-half, who joins the Lilywhites from Charlton Athletic, who beat Sunderland in last month's League One play-off final at Wembley, is Neil's first signing of the summer.

Bauer, who has agreed a three-year deal with Preston, scored the winning goal in stoppage time for Lee Bowyer's side at Wembley.

He made 135 appearances for the Addicks in his four years at The Valley, having started his career with Stuttgart and then spending three years in the Portuguese top-flight with Maritimo.

Bauer said: "I am really excited to be here. I am happy to play finally in the Championship again and I am really delighted. I can't wait to meet all my new team-mates, all the staff and management and get started."

Meanwhile, Neil added: "Patrick is a strong and powerful defender who we have monitored closely.

"He has experience of playing at the top level in Portugal and adapted very well to English football in the past few years. He will add more competition to our defence in the central positions."

Preston are 8/1 to be relegated from the Championship in 2019/20 while Charlton are 9/4 to go down and Barnsley 2/1.
