Pirlo is no stranger to Major League Soccer, having assisted in the expansion of NYCFC. From 2015 to 2017, he played with the Cityzens for three seasons, scoring one goal and adding 18 assists in 60 regular-season matches.

Andrea Pirlo was asked if he might coach in Major League Soccer one day in an exclusive conversation with James Horncastle of TheAthleticUK.

“It’s a great league. I see lots of coaches coming to MLS from other countries. I was lucky enough to play there,” he told The Athletic's James Horncastle. “You saw what the USMNT did in the Gold Cup, so I’d say the American game is taking off. Lots of Americans are now playing for the best clubs in the world – Juve, Barcelona, Chelsea. If they’re playing at that level, it speaks to their potential.”

Pirlo coached Juventus in the 2020-21 season, winning the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana with a team that includes FC Dallas youth product and USMNT midfielder Weston McKennie.
