Manchester United are considering a January move for Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde as they assess options amid uncertainty over Lisandro Martinez’s future.
The 22-year-old has struggled to secure regular first-team football under Barcelona manager Hansi Flick and could now be allowed to leave, according to reports in Spain.
Balde was left out again during Barcelona’s 6-1 victory over Deportivo Alaves at the weekend. Joao Cancelo was used at left-back, while Brian Farinas was given a start on the right.
Barcelona have won all three of their UEFA Champions League matches this season, scoring 12 goals in the competition. Their next game is against Aston Villa, but Balde is expected to remain on the bench once again.
The Spain international has made only limited appearances this season, playing 101 minutes in La Liga and 16 minutes in the UEFA Champions League. His lack of involvement has contributed to growing speculation that he is no longer part of Flick’s plans and has been deemed surplus to requirements.
Fabrizio Romano has reported that Manchester United contacted Barcelona during the summer about a possible deal, although an agreement proved difficult to complete.
The situation could change if Martinez leaves Old Trafford. The club are due to hold a meeting with the World Cup winner this week to discuss his uncertain future, with his contract running until 2027.
Should Martinez depart, Balde could be considered as a replacement. The Barcelona academy graduate is reportedly becoming increasingly open to leaving in January after failing to establish himself as a regular starter.
Manchester United’s interest comes as they remain close to the relegation zone following their defeat by Chelsea at the weekend. That position could make strengthening the squad in January a priority, while Balde’s reduced role at Barcelona may make a move more appealing to the defender.
United are understood to value Balde more highly than Barcelona currently do, with his limited playing time contrasting sharply with the potential opportunity available to him in Manchester. However, any transfer would depend on Barcelona’s willingness to let the left-back leave and the outcome of Martinez’s discussions with United.
