The former Trabzonspor midfielder was racially abused by fans of the home side in a league match involving Maccabi Jaffa and Bnei Yehuda.

Ogu played an active role as Maccabi secured a lone goal win, but he was racially abused in the course of the game.

Maccabi came out to condemn the abuse and insisted they are against any form of abuse.

"Maccabi Kabilio Jaffa football club stands firm behind and with John Ogu after the racial abuse he suffered from a few rival fans yesterday.

"There is no place for these incidents on the pitch, or anywhere else for that matter.

You have our back John! ", the club said.

On 23 September 2006, he began his senior career in Slovenia when he signed with Drava Ptuj from the Slovenian PrvaLiga. In his four-year stint, Ogu scored eight goals in 97 appearances.

Ogu made his debut for the Super Eagles against Kenya in a 1-1 when he replaced an injured Victor Moses in a 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifier.

Atlético Clube de Portugal scored his first international goal against Mexico in a friendly game which took place at the Reliant Stadium in Houston on 31 May, 2014.
