With 10 new players having arrived already ahead of the 2019/20 season, Fowler says it will be important to get them gelling on the pitch.

The Liverpool legend took over a club that had seen 16 players leave or retire following the end of last season when they failed to qualify for the Finals Series.

The new squad's first competitive game will be against defending league champions Sydney FC in the FFA Cup at Leichhardt Oval on 7th August.

Fowler, who had stints with North Queensland Fury and Perth Glory in the latter stages of his playing career, said: "I think it's a magnificent game for myself to start. There's no pressure on us whatsoever - we're playing against the reigning champions."

Brisbane's first pre-season fixture will be against Redlands United on 13th July and they will face Brisbane City a week later. A pre-season camp in Gladstone is also on the agenda ahead of the FFA Cup Round of 32 clash with the Sky Blues.

Fowler says he's looking forward to testing his squad as they continue to build ahead of the new season.

"We'll get in a little bit of a base with fitness at training but you want to get them to play a game and understand the way you want to play," he added.

"The professionalism has been brilliant and I think the sooner we play games and the sooner the players understand what myself and the coaching staff want here, the better. The games can't come quick enough for me."

Brisbane Roar are 16/1 to win the 2020 Grand Final.
