Nigeria’s first ever goal scorer at the Africa Cup of Nations Asuqou Ekpe is dead.

Ekpe made history as the first Nigerian to score a goal at the African Cup of Nations when he scored in

Nigeria’s 6-3 loss to Egypt in Kumasi, Ghana in 1963.

Respected sports journalist Kunle Solaja who broke the news revealed that Asuqou died on January 30, 2016, in Calabar.

Ekpe was one of Nigeria’s finest in the 50’s and 60’s and played for various clubs which include Lagos Railways II, Welch XI, Secretariat FC and Western Rovers.

He debuted for Nigeria in an international friendly with Togo in 1956 and played his last game for Nigeria in a 1-1 draw with Dahomey (now Benin) in an All Africa Games qualifier.

Ekpe played 28 matches for the national team.

The former international will be buried at Henshaw Town in Calabar.
