Federation Cup defending champions, Akwa United FC yesterday dashed the hopes of Kwara United FC breaking the jinx of the nation’s Premier competition this year, as they edged the Harmony Boys by a lone goal. The only goal of the match was scored by Cyril Olisema in the 19th minute. Kwara United FC entered the competition with the hope of making it to the final, and they did start well, beating Galadima Best of Kebbi state 7-0 in the Round of 64 in Abuja.
Kwara United’s ambition was truncated yesterday at the Aper Aku stadium in Makurdi. Asides the goal that separated the two sides, Kwara United FC dominated play from the blast of the whistle, dictating the pace of the knock-out encounter, especially in the second half, but could not take the numerous chances created. The introduction of Michael Ohanu, Jimoh Ahmed and Esobe Chukwudi increased the pressure on the Akwa-Ibom based side, who for the better part of the second half retired home to defend their goal. Akwa United FC will play Sunshine Stars in the Round of 16 of the competition.
