Black Stars trio Asamoah Gyan, Andre Ayew and Harrison Afful shortlisted for Sports Writers Player of Year award
Striker Asamoah Gyan will be competing against Andre Ayew and Harrison Afful for SWAG’s Footballer of the Year award.
The Al Ain ace appears to be the overwhelming favourite to win the award following his explosive individual performance in 2014.
Gyan became the all-time leading scoring African in the history of the World Cup finals in Brazil to beat the long-standing record set by Cameroon legend Roger Milla in 1990.
He was also adjudged the Best Foreign Player in Asia in the year under review after his heroics in the Asian Champions League with Al Ain.
The former Sunderland hitman emerged the top scorer of the continental competition with 12 goals to help the Boss reach the semi finals.
Gyan was also in the initial shortlist for the 2014 African Player of the Year award but was shockingly left out of the final three-man shortlist.
He was however named as the leading striker in the African XI squad compiled by CAF.
In other categories, Abeiku Ainooson will be competing for the Premiership Player of the Year against Kwabena Edusei and Augustine Okrah while Jennifer Cudjoe will be handed the Female Footballer of the Year award.
Asante Kotoko will also be handed the club of the Year award after finishing the season with the League and FA Cup double.
SWAG is holding nominees for its flagship Sports Personality of the Yeear award close to its chest.
Asamoah Gyan is however likely to also be nominated for the top award up for grabs, GHANAsoccernet.com has gathered.
The venue and date for the SWAG awards will soon be released.
