Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side, Akwa United have opened talk with former key players aimed at bringing them back to the Promise Keepers.
Akwa United already have a date with the Congolese side, Club Mokanda in the Caf Confederation Cup and on Monday cemented a two-year contract with the Belgian, Maurice Cooreman.
The former players on the recall list are Mfon Udoh, Kufre Ubong, Ubong Ekpai, Ezekiel Bassey, Etim Matthew, Godspower Aniefiok, among others.
An official of the Uyo outfit who will not want to be named said the plan to bring back the side’s former players to the fold is part of the new regime programme to strengthen the team ahead of its campaign in the continent as well as the domestic league.
“Right now 25 players out of 34 were retained for the upcoming football season while the new head coach, Maurice Cooreman has been asked to bring in seven – nine experienced players to beef up the team for a successful campaign at the continent.
“Already many players including some key indigenous ones have indicated interest to be part and parcel of the side programme for the new season.
“Among the natives are the side’s former players who left the team at various times to other club sides in the land.
“There is high level talk to ensure the likes of Mfon Udoh (Enyimba), Kufre Ebong (Warri Wolves), Ubong Ekpai (Kano Pillars), Ezekiel Bassey (Enyimba), Etim Matthew (Enugu Rangers), Godspower Aniefiok (Kano Pillars), among others return to Akwa United.
“These are plans to see the side succeed in the Caf Confederation Cup as well as the domestic league,” said the unnamed source to supersport.com.
Cooreman will work with three assistant coaches as the crew is tasked with winning the Caf Confederation Cup as well as the top flight next season.
